¿Qué es Dental Implants in Costa Rica?

Comprenda el procedimiento y qué esperar

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once the implant fuses with the bone (osseointegration, 3-6 months), a custom crown is attached on top, creating a permanent tooth replacement that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants don't slip, don't require adjacent teeth to be ground down, and stimulate jawbone to prevent bone loss. Modern dental implants have a 95-98% success rate and can last a lifetime with proper care. They are the gold standard for tooth replacement in modern dentistry, with over 500,000 placed annually in the US.

Riesgos e información de seguridad

Comprenda los posibles riesgos y cómo minimizarlos

Riesgos comunes

  • Swelling, bruising, and minor pain for 3-7 days post-surgery (well-managed with medication)
  • Temporary difficulty chewing on affected side during healing
  • Minor bleeding at surgical site for first 24 hours
  • Temporary increased sensitivity in adjacent teeth
  • Dietary restrictions (soft foods) for first week
  • Need for temporary tooth replacement during healing (flipper or temporary bridge)
  • Slight risk of implant not integrating (5% failure rate, higher in smokers)

Riesgos poco frecuentes

  • Infection at implant site requiring antibiotics or implant removal (1-2%)
  • Implant failure to osseointegrate (fuse with bone), requiring removal and replacement
  • Nerve damage causing numbness/tingling in lip, chin, or tongue (usually temporary, rarely permanent)
  • Sinus perforation if upper implant extends into sinus cavity (correctable)
  • Damage to adjacent teeth during placement
  • Bone loss around implant (peri-implantitis) due to poor hygiene or smoking
  • Implant fracture (rare with modern titanium implants)
  • Allergic reaction to titanium (extremely rare)
  • Prolonged healing or delayed osseointegration
  • Crown or abutment loosening requiring retightening

Cómo minimizar los riesgos

Choose an experienced implant dentist with hundreds of successful implant placements-ask to see their success rates and before/after photos. Ensure proper imaging (CT scan) for precise planning and to check bone density. Quit smoking completely-smoking is #1 cause of implant failure. Treat any gum disease before implant surgery. Follow all pre-operative instructions: discontinue blood thinners if approved by physician, arrange transportation post-surgery. Post-operatively: take antibiotics as prescribed, maintain excellent oral hygiene (gentle brushing, saltwater rinses), eat soft foods initially, avoid disturbing surgical site, no smoking or alcohol. Attend all follow-up appointments. After crown placement: practice excellent oral hygiene (brushing, flossing with special implant floss), regular professional cleanings every 6 months, wear night guard if you grind teeth. With proper care, implants can last a lifetime.

Alternative Tooth Replacement Options

Explore otras opciones de tratamiento que podría considerar

Fixed Dental Bridge

Replaces missing tooth by placing crowns on adjacent teeth with false tooth in middle. Faster than implants (2-3 weeks), lower upfront cost. However, requires grinding down healthy adjacent teeth (irreversible), doesn't prevent bone loss under missing tooth, bridges typically last 10-15 years vs lifetime implants, and hygiene more difficult under bridge. Good option if adjacent teeth already need crowns.

Removable Partial Denture

Removable appliance with replacement teeth that clips onto remaining natural teeth. Lowest cost option, non-invasive. However, less comfortable, may slip during eating/speaking, requires removal for cleaning and sleeping, can damage remaining teeth over time, doesn't prevent bone loss. Many people find them uncomfortable and frustrating. Best for temporary solution or those unable to do surgery.

Complete Dentures (Full Arch)

For those missing all teeth, traditional dentures are removable acrylic teeth. Much less expensive than implants ($1,000-$3,000 vs $20,000-$40,000 for full arch implants). However, dentures slip, have reduced chewing ability (25-50% of natural), require adhesives, accelerate bone loss, need frequent adjustments/remakes. Implant-supported dentures (All-on-4/All-on-6) combine benefits: fixed, stable, prevent bone loss.

Do Nothing (No Replacement)

Some choose not to replace missing teeth, especially back molars. No cost, no treatment. However, leads to progressive bone loss, adjacent teeth shift/tilt into space (causing bite problems), opposing tooth super-erupts, jaw joint (TMJ) stress, difficulty chewing, and accelerated loss of additional teeth. Front tooth loss also significantly impacts appearance and self-confidence. Generally not recommended by dentists.
