Should You Drive from SJO to La Fortuna After Landing?
Usually no—if you land in the afternoon or evening. Sleep near SJO, then drive or transfer after breakfast.

Short answer
Arenal / La Fortuna is typically about 2.5–3.5 hours from the San José airport area in good conditions. After a flight, immigration, and rental-car pickup, a same-night drive often means dark mountain roads when you are tired. Most guests are happier overnight near SJO and leaving in the morning.
When a same-day drive can make sense
Early arrival (morning), short immigration wait, car ready quickly, experienced Costa Rica drivers, and daylight for most of the trip. Even then, build buffer for traffic and stops.
When to stay near SJO instead
- Afternoon or evening landing.
- First time driving in Costa Rica.
- Families with kids, or anyone who wants dinner and a pool before a long drive.
- You would rather take a private transfer or shuttle in daylight.
A simple plan that works
Land → free shuttle to Adventure Inn → eat if before kitchen last order (or preorder) → sleep → breakfast → drive or transfer to La Fortuna. Adventure Inn sits between SJO and the routes north toward Arenal.
