Costa Rica jolted by major earthquake

On January 8th, 2009 at 1:21 pm, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 shook Costa Rica's central valley. Even though Adventure Inn is located only about 30 km from the epicenter, we were mainly unaffected and our staff and guests were completely unhamed physically, but some were shaken up emotionally. In case of a strong aftershock, we decided to evacuate the hotel for about half an hour, however only small ones occurred and continued for the rest of the day. Fortunately the only thing shattered at Adventure Inn was our nerves! The hotel is relatively new (about 12 years old) and is made of solid poured concrete, so we did not suffer too much damage, but we do have some long hairpin cracks in one of our corridors with a high ceiling and some of the trim fell off from up above. The damage appears to be mostly cosmetic, but we will have an expert in to assess the damage and fix it if necessary.

In case you were wondering, all future reservations are still confirmed, and we will be expecting you.

So far, the death toll of the quake is 15, however this may increase as the days go on since there are still many people unaccounted for and others badly injured. These were mainly due to quake-induced landslides. As well, the only road leading down from the Poas volcano completely caved in leaving some 300 tourists stranded there for the night. Rescue workers have now evacuated everyone via helicopter. For this reason, any tours involving the Poas Volcano or La Paz waterfall gardens will be suspended until further notice.
